East Basildon PCN supports the NHS Covid Vaccination Programme
In September 2023, the 4 practices that make up the East Basildon PCN, serving approximately 27,000 patients, will support the NHS Covid vaccination programme.
The 4 practices in East Basildon consist of:
- Dr Sims and Partners
- Felmores Medical Centre
- Aryan Medical Centre
- Matching Green Surgery
Each practice will allocate days where patients can visit their surgery to receive the Covid vaccination in anticipation of the new variant.

Millions of individuals who meet the eligibility criteria shall be extended the offer to receive a covid vaccine, effective from the 11th of September.

Am I eligible for an autumn Covid booster?
The following people are eligible for an autumn Covid booster:
- Residents in care homes for older adults
- All adults aged 65 years and over
- People aged 6 months to 64 years in a clinical risk group, as defined in tables 3 and 4 of the Covid-19 chapter of the UKHSA Green Book on Immunisation
- frontline health and social care workers.
- People aged 12 to 64 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression, as defined in the UKHSA Green Book
- People aged 16 to 64 years who are carers, as defined in the UKHSA Green Book, and staff working in care homes for older adults
The rationale behind this is that the likelihood of experiencing severe Covid symptoms remains significantly linked to pre-existing, underlying health conditions and increasing age.
When is the booster available and how do I book an appointment?
- Vaccinations will begin on 11 September for those most at risk, including adult care home residents and people who are immunosuppressed.
- From 18 September, the NHS will start to invite people in priority order of risk and those eligible will be able to book an appointment on the National Booking Service.

- Vaccines help to protect against severe illness, hospitalisations and deaths from Covid.
- People who received an autumn booster vaccine last year were around 53% less likely to go to the hospital with Covid in the two to four weeks after getting vaccinated, compared to those who didn’t get a booster.
- Last year’s autumn booster programme saw almost 84% of over-80s vaccinated and more than 73% of 65-70-year-olds, protecting the most vulnerable and helping us to live with Covid.
Side effects
After you’ve had the vaccine, you might feel unwell for a short time. This is known as having side effects.
Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that these side effects are usually mild in nature and not universally experienced.

The main side effects are:
- feeling tired
- having a headache
- feeling aches and pains, or like you have a mild flu
- you might feel hot for 1 or 2 days
- your arm feeling heavy or sore where you got the vaccine for 1 or 2 days

It will say on the packet how much you should take.
Side effects normally last less than a week. If you feel like you are getting more unwell or if you are worried, call NHS 111. Make sure you tell any health professionals you speak to that you have just had your coronavirus vaccine.
This will help them give you the right care. If you can, show them your coronavirus vaccine card.
If you do get side effects, you still need to have the second lot of the vaccine. Having the second lot will give you the best protection against coronavirus.
You cannot catch coronavirus from the vaccine. But it is possible to catch coronavirus before your vaccine and not realise you have it until after your vaccine appointment.
